understand r5057 crashing on irene

Description

During code cleanup, r5057 was commited as it seemed to simplify the actual code. Unfortunately, it raised a 'Houston' error in tests on irene in mpi_omp mode. We rolled back in r5145 but would like to understand what went wrong.
